The Respiratory System

More Than Just the Lungs

When most people think about the respiratory system, they think of it as simply “the lungs.” In reality, it’s the delivery system for the body’s most immediate performance resource: oxygen. Every tissue in your body depends on it every second of every day. For someone interested in training—especially over 45—the respiratory system is about much more than breathing. The Respiratory System Is the Gateway

Nothing happens without oxygen. Every muscle contraction, every heartbeat, every thought, and every recovery process depends on a constant supply. Think of it this way: the muscular system is the engine, the cardiovascular system is the transportation network, and the respiratory system is the loading dock where oxygen enters and carbon dioxide exits. If the loading dock isn’t functioning efficiently, the entire operation slows down.

The Truth: The Nose, the Diaphragm, and the Wiring You Don’t See

Unlike your heartbeat, breathing is one of the few automatic functions you can consciously control, and that makes it incredibly powerful. A slower, more controlled breathing pattern can lower unnecessary muscle tension, improve oxygen efficiency, reduce sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) activation, sharpen focus before a heavy lift, and speed recovery between sets. Most people also believe the urge to breathe comes from low oxygen. It doesn’t. It’s primarily driven by rising carbon dioxide. Learning to tolerate slightly higher CO2 levels through controlled breathing can improve breathing efficiency and reduce unnecessary over-breathing during exercise.

Mouth breathing certainly has its place—during maximal effort, sprinting, or when ventilation demand exceeds what the nose can comfortably provide—but if you’re mouth breathing while sitting at your desk or walking across a parking lot, you’re probably working harder than necessary. Many people become less active, lose chest wall mobility, develop shallower breathing patterns, spend more time sitting, and carry more stress. The result is often reduced respiratory efficiency—not because the lungs suddenly fail, but because the breathing mechanics become less effective. This doesn’t mean decline is inevitable. It means mobility, posture, and a few minutes of deliberate practice deserve a permanent place in the plan.

The Lesson: Train the Muscle Behind the Breath

Many people think of breathing as something the chest does. It isn’t. Your diaphragm does most of the work. When it contracts, it pulls downward, expanding the lungs and drawing air in. Bracing and breathing during a heavy lift A strong, well-functioning diaphragm improves posture, helps stabilize the spine, assists with heavy lifting by increasing intra-abdominal pressure, and makes breathing more efficient overall. It’s one of the few muscles that never gets a day off. That’s exactly why it’s worth training on purpose.
